Price the preparation as carefully as the miles. Dimensions, loading method and securement details decide whether a load fits the truck.
01 / BEFORE THE QUOTE
Check the equipment.
Confirm deck length, usable payload, axle configuration and the dimensions and weight of each piece. List the actual chains, binders, straps, edge protection and tarps carried. Check loading and unloading methods at both ends.
02 / BEFORE ACCEPTANCE
Check the freight.
Steel, lumber and machinery can require different securement arrangements. A generic equipment list is not a load-specific securement plan. Obtain commodity details before confirming the booking.
Build the whole trip.
Separate linehaul from agreed tarping, permits, extra stops and waiting charges. Include the time to prepare, secure, inspect and remove coverings in the trip plan, along with repositioning miles.
When the clock runs.
Establish whether the facility has the crane or forklift needed and whether the loading slot is fixed. Record delays and get written agreement for additional work before it becomes a billing dispute.
Read the lane, not a promise.
Ask about job-site access, weather restrictions and the receiving crew’s availability. Construction demand varies by project and region; a broad seasonal claim is not a confirmed load.
